Mel da Mata: pollinating meliponaries, is a socio-environmental project for the implantation of colonies of Uruçu-stingless bees (Melipona scutellaris), initially in the Metropolitan Landfill Centro - BATTRE, with the objectives of: promoting pollination in the area of native vegetation of the UVS and speed up the reproduction and preservation process of the Uruçu-serrão Bee, which is on the list of species at risk of extinction, but above all contribute to the preservation and conservation of the surrounding native forest.

In addition, the project that takes place in Battre's green belt and surrounding communities, contributes to the generation of income for the residents of the Carobeira, Cassange and Nova Esperança communities, through courses and donation of colonies to train new meliponiculturists.

The project, which started in 2019 and is expected to continue in 2020, also benefits the water resources of APA Joanes Ipitanga.

Bees are undoubtedly the most important pollinators for the reproduction of most plants with flowers, fruits and seeds and due to their dependence on floral resources, bees have many adaptations to the location and collection of these resources.

Visiting the flowers can and end up involuntarily promoting pollination, which is a key ecological service for the maintenance and conservation of ecosystems, and can act as bioindicators of environmental quality.

Therefore, because BATTRE is located in a domain area of the Atlantic Forest, in the middle stage of ecological succession, it becomes a favorable environment for the creation of this species.

Thus, UVS found a way to contribute naturally to the environment and still involve communities, generating income, sharing knowledge, providing environmental education and promoting the social development of these families.
